Trash Free Potomac Network - Connecting for a Trash Free Watershed

2019 Extreme Cleanup - Mouth of Rock Creek
Cleanup Event

This Cleanup is part of the Potomac River Watershed Cleanup

April 13, 2019, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Join Rock Creek Conservancy for our 11th Annual Rock Creek Extreme Cleanup. Volunteers will clean-up the lands, banks, tributaries, and waters of Rock Creek throughout Maryland and D.C. Our goal is total stream cleanup of Rock Creek and its tributaries, the parks connected to Rock Creek, and the neighborhoods near Rock Creek where trash originates. We work closely with the National Park Service and Montgomery County Parks.

Date and Time: Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Where: Volunteers will meet at the Mouth of Rock Creek in the parking lot of Thompson's Boat Center. Very limited parking may be available in the lot. Volunteers can also park in the surrounding Georgetown neighborhood and walk to the meeting site, or travel via Metro and walk from the Foggy Bottom station.

Leader Contact: This site is still in need of a leader. If you are interested in hosting here, please contact volunteer@rockcreekconservancy.org.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Wear sturdy boots or sneakers. We recommend long pants and sleeves to prevent contact with poison ivy. We also encourage volunteers to wear a hat.

What to Bring: Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Feel free to bring your own tools and gloves if you have them. Students can earn SSL hours, but please bring needed forms. Bring water and any snacks that you may want.

Weather/Cancellation Policy: All participants will be notified via email at least 12 hours before the event start time if an event is canceled due to inclement weather. If you do not hear from us you should assume the event will occur as scheduled. All cancellations will be updated on the event calendar listing. Please check back if you are unsure.

Notes & Special Issues

Mouth of Rock Creek site runs from the mouth of the creek as it enters the Potomac River up to the P Street, NW Bridge in the District of Columbia. Mouth is 75-100 feet wide an approximately 13 feet deep. The lower part of this section has steep banks on both sides and large boulders under the four overpasses. Large boulder rip-rap covers the west side of Rock Creek below P Street, NW where the creek channel is near the roadway of Rock Creek Parkway. Last year we used two canoes to locate and pull debris out of the deeper parts of Rock Creek near the mouth. A canoe is needed to move workers to the west side of the creek where boulders protect the banks from erosion.
