Cleanup at Mt. Lock towpath

Cleanup Event

This is a cleanup event for the area near Limekiln rd. overlooking the towpath and C and O canal near Mt. Lock Rd. and Limekiln Rd. intersection, a little North of milepost 68 on the towpath/canal, There is a parking area at the "bus turnaround" on Limekiln Rd. nearest the cleanup site, and another area to park at the entrance to the canal on Mt. Lock Rd.

There was a cleanup event at this site in April, 2018. the site, midway between Milepost 68 and 69 on the towpath of the C and O canal, has historically been used as a dumping area. We removed over 100 tires and assorted furniture and trash, which filled a couple of dump trucks supplied by the Washington Co. government. This year we would like to finish the job. There is some new debris and remnants of stuff on the hill we didn't have time/people power to collect last year.

Watershed Cleanup Around American Legion Bridge

Cleanup Event

Fifth year in a row we've been tackling this site. This year we'll be working upstream (west of the bridge) working around Rock Run Creek and in the flood plain down to the Potomac River. After five years of working the same area the flanks of the American Legion Bridge are fairly clean (knock on wood) but, given that the highway is a gift (of trash) that keeps on giving, a group will be needed to work there. There is much natural beauty here to appreciate but be prepared for highway noise. We will meet in the parking lot at Lockhouse #10 on the C&O Canal then walk up to the bridge area. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me if you have any questions about how to get to the site.
Please note that students who participate WILL qualify for service hours -- just bring your form with you for me to sign. If it's raining (drizzle OK) the event will be called off.
NPS wants me to get all volunteers to sign a volunteer service agreement form (I know, I hate the bureaucracy, too). If you could print it out (see follow...
