"Project Clean Water" is a program designed to give participants hands-on experience in environmental stewardship, an opportunity to make a personal pledge of action to help keep our waters clean, and learn how our faith connects to the environment. The Denny House and our Community Partners come together six times a year to clean up our neighborhood streets and streams, laying the foundation for our next generation of environmental leaders.

Mallows Bay Trash Cleanup

Cleanup Event

In Mallows Bay, more than 100 World War 1-era wooden vessels rest in the shallow bay -waters and along its shoreline marking one of the most curious yet important periods in the Nation’s maritime history. It's an exciting year to be along this section of the Potomac! Mallows Bay and an adjacent area of the Potomac River are being considered for designation as a National Marine Sanctuary. Additionally, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, in cooperation with MD DNR, will be launching a new water quality buoy for recreational and commercial users!

Bring a canoe, kayak or walk along the shore. Join local historians and archaeologists who will share the stories of Mallows as part of the cleanup activities. If you need a rental, please contact Judy at Atlantic Kayak (info@atlantickayak.com) or 301-292-6455 - she will deliver and pick up the kayak and safety gear.

Thanks for considering this legendary site along the Potomac. We hope you are able to join us.

Shepherd Parkway Community Clean-Up

Cleanup Event

Shepherd Parkway is a federal park that covers the hillside between I-295 and the neighborhoods of Congress Heights and Bellevue in the far southern part of Washington, DC. Its 197 acres of eastern hardwood forest include the remains of two Civil War forts, two bald eagle nests, and views across the city.

Unfortunately, lack of trails, signage or programs have made the park a target for illegal dumping. Invasive plants threaten its ecosystem of native plants and animals.

Since 2011, over 2,000 volunteers have removed over 200 tons of trash from the woods and cut invasive vines from over 500 trees. But the job is far from finished

With more than 1,000 acres of forest, Chapman Park is home to many rare plant species and a variety of wildlife. This is truly a special place and we'll do our best to keep it wild by picking up the trash on the shoreline of the Potomac River that comes from the metropolitan areas up river.

Please wear closed toed shoes and dress to be outdoors. All supplies will be provided. We will meet just past the park entrance (by the house, Mt. Aventine). After a quick introduction we will walk as a group down to the shoreline. It's about a 10 minute (beautiful) walk!
